Welcome to my poetry blog!
My name is Alysia and I currently am an elementary teacher, who loves to write poetry to cope with complex societal issues/justice and mental health.
This blog was created because Cal, my friend, talked me into sharing my writing. I am not a huge lover of sharing my writing nor do I claim to be any good at it especially when it comes to grammar, and such. I can write well enough to get my point across but I am sure this blog will be riddled with sentence fragments, mistakes, and nonsense. I like to think of me being okay with it as me fighting a racist system of language and the need for perfectionism. ahaha
Anyways, why am I making this blog?
Well as I mentioned I sorta had to. My friend Cal and I have made deals for years now. These deals are always centered around getting out of our comfort zone and pursuing something that we enjoy. For Cal, it is his music and for me it is my poetry. Our first deal was in college after Cal found out I wrote poetry I never shared or performed. So, after finding this out Cal made me promise that we both would perform a poem at the annual poetry event at the university. He was able to keep his side of the deal but I was too scared. Despite this unfortunate broken promise I started sharing my poems with Cal and obviously he continued to encourage me to share. Our 2nd deal was made not long after the passing of my grandma. . A few months after her passing Cal and I were out celebrating our friend Kayla’s birthday downtown. To my dismay he told me how great it was and tried to convince me to send in my poetry. I was not having it, but I remembered that Cal once told me that if he could do anything it would be music. So, I told him that I would send in a poem within a year if he started writing and singing his own music. And we both kept this promise! unfortunately, I did not get published. However, Cal and I have continued to share our poetry and music with each other. At the beginning of this month we decided to make a new deal. The deal is that Cal will make an album by 2023 and I will create a poetry blog while still sending poems in for publishing. Update: I will be self publishing a limited number of copies January 22, 2023 (the day may be moved but trying to finish this project by the end of this month among other things.) Thanks Canva and Krystiana (she is proofing everything)!
I wasn’t too keen on this idea but Cal was pretty proud of himself for coming up with this blog idea. ughhhh. I am still a bit scared to share but at the same time I am excited about this blog. My poetry is often a reflection of my inner feelings and it has always been a great way for me to write about complex emotions. ehhhh I hate those. I love poetry because the process almost always surprises me with new insights. And I like to hide parts of me in the ways that sometimes only I see. I like the ambiguity and the open interpretation that writing poetry provides. If you are some rando that decides to read my poems, my hope is that you can find parts of yourself in each poem and maybe even gain insights to your inner world.
